All hail the internetz!

If you want it, it's almost always out there.

Lately, for some unknown reason, every time I go to www.gocomics.com on my Vista (ccchhhxxxt-paTOO!) laptop, the page would take two minutes to load up about 8 comic strips. It always told me it was waiting for "static.ak.fbcdn.net", and "rd. meebo.com". Some hefty Googling showed me that Static Akamai Facebook Content Delivery Network was the culprit, and apparently is involved in putting Facebook's "like" and "share" buttons on other pages.

A number of forums discussed the speed problems, and suggested putting direct routes for these two websites into my hosts file to bypass any DNS lookups that might be slowing things down. No dice.

Then, in desperation, I dug a bit deeper, and found this page, which interestingly enough addressed the problem in Malaysia but then expanded to handle other countries as well. They suggested rerouting "static.ak.fbcdn.net" directly to "www.facebook.com". Voilà - problem solved.

Why this was a problem on my Vista (ccchhhxxxt-paTOO!) laptop with a blazing-fast twin core, and not on my 6-year-old XP tower is a total mystery to me. But I have my loading speed back, and I'm not going to ask questions. Huge thanks to HeHeHunter!

All hail the internetz!
