Writer's Block: Search for intelligent life

Do you believe there is other intelligent life in distant galaxies? If no, why not? If yes, do you believe this is something to be feared and avoided or actively sought out?

In my mind there is no question. The vastness of the universe, to my way of thinking, guarantees it.

Despite its seeming futility, given that our sphere of electronic presence is less than 80 ly in diameter, I support the SETI effort. It would be a huge boon to our petty, fragmented, jealous, power-hungry and paranoid collective human psyche to know that we are not the be-all and the end-all of creation. However, as a good friend of mine intimated, those out there who could contact us are assiduously refraining from doing so, which is a pretty good indication that we are not ready to join the larger community.

Someone asked Enrico Fermi if he thought beings of higher intelligence could be living among us. He said, "Yes, they're called Hungarians."

In my mind, there's about a 50% chance. And a nearly 0% chance of us gaining anything from trying to find it.
