The Waterford Crystal Factory: A tribute

Uff! Finally got this uploaded - YouTube doesn't like MPEG2 format, so after trying MPEG4 with unsastisfactory results, I reverted to WMV, which gave me the quality I wanted.

In 1998, our family took a trip to Europe, and spent a week in Ireland - one of the things we took in was the Waterford crystal factory in Kilbarry (near Cork), Ireland.

Sadly, the factory is no more. Economics drove someone to make a shitty decision, and the dedicated people who worked there found themselves out of a job. Subesequent protests led to a settlement with the parent company, but the factory remains closed.

It was a miracle to watch these blobs of molten silicon turn into works of breathtaking beauty. I can only hope that someday the powers that be will re-open this factory and put these good people back to work.

I very much enjoy your choice of music. Celtic music is enjoyable to listen to (even if you don't know the language). My Dad is especially a fan of Celtic music. Must be the irish in him - he's scottish, english & Irish. Our family even has a family crest.

No disrespect to the Chinese, but this was high-quality stuff that also had the panache of history behind it. The only piece I had from that factory went with SWMBOBNA... *snif*

I can't believe that people will abandon crystal and Waterford's was good quality. We bought a quite large elephant in 1996 there, for our collection. Their glasses were a bit bulky for my taste, Rogaska always made them so thin and I got used to those :) Rogaska isn't doing very well either, though :(
