Perhaps my favorite Skiffy story

Along with The Ugly Little Boy, this story by the revered Dr. Isaac Asimov probably rates as my favorite story from the realm of Science Fiction. It makes me laugh and cry together, every time I read it.

My experience of the Good Doctor, perhaps one of the world's best known secular humanists, is that even while holding strictly to the doctrine of proof through empirical evidence, he yearned within his heart for something greater than himself. This story, more than any other, demonstrates the hoped-for transcendence of Man to a higher state.

I'm sure I have read that before, but the answer still surprised and-- also a surprise-- delighted me. It was very interesting indeed.

I think that "timeless interval" might have been 5.39124E-44 seconds.

Interesting comment on the "timeless interval". Hadn't thought of that angle!

And it's funny - even though I know the story by heart, almost - the ending still makes me chuckle.

Asimov was a master.

That is the best kind of ending.
