Service - the best medicine

Flying a desk for 30 years can be exhausting. A divorce can be draining. Transitioning from full-time employment to entrepreneurship can be nerve-wracking. I recall that when things got tough in the past, I would often get into my garden and work with the soil - it helped me connect with the peace and constancy of Mother Gaia, and invariably brought peace.

This month I have taken the opportunity to get down and dirty with physical labor, helping some dear friends of mine who own a farm in West Virginia. It's hay time, they are planning a party, and there's a lot to be done around the 180 acres of soil on which 18 cows and 40 (very) odd sheep roam around. I'm here getting dirty and exhausted every day, and feeling totally wonderful - not only because I get to do _real_ work again, but also because I know that what I'm doing is needed and appreciated. Nothing helps one forget the challenges of life better than giving to others.

So I'm painting, weeding, mowing, struggling with balky hay balers, running errands, picking up feed, feeding calves and lambs, repairing broken statuary, fixing jammed doors, cleaning out, sidestepping cowpies, rounding up lost cows, patching fences, sweating, watching fireflies rise up out of the grass at evening, and generally enjoying myself more than I have in decades.
