Rogue Facebook Applications

Some time ago I received an invitation from someone on my friends list to join the following application. I never use apps, for some fundamental reasons of privacy, but I usually check them out so I can warn others if an app seems flaky.

This one took the cake.

So by clicking "Allow", I would be

  1. Giving all my info to the publishers
  2. Allowing them to market to me via email at any time
  3. Allowing them to post anything to Facebook at any time using my name, effectively marketing to all my friends.
  4. And allowing them to mine into my data 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Naturally, I reported this app to Facebook and it seems to have vanished rather quickly. However, I wonder how many people just clicked "Allow" without thinking about it?

Practice safe Facebooking - don't click something without knowing what you're getting into.

Ooh, that last one is a big problem.

However, their wording for "Post to Facebook as me" could be greatly improved for quiz-type applications, especially if it only posts once.

I'm considering deleting my Facebook account yet again...I don't like the idea they went public... It means now were going to get more freaking apps that are mining our data, marketing to us, and more bloody crap on it. Blah... If I wanted that crap I would have stayed on Myspace.
