I hang my head in disgrace. There were so many words on this list that I should know, but don't.

Huh. Hard to know the accuracy of these things. English has more than 600,000 words no longer disputed as English. Shakespeare used more than 300,000 words, but they weren't all English.

As a word geek, I got a score of 40K give or take 200, depending whether you count the borderline knowledge. Only about five words were utterly new to me.

This doesn't sound right:
27,100

Though I'm not entirely sure if this is accurate in any way...

I got 33,500 myself. I don't know why you're ashamed: "Most Native English adult speakers who have taken the test fall in the range 20,000–35,000 words." For starters, the words you do have, you use masterfully. Second, when you know at least eight other languages, it no longer is considered a test of intelligence as to how many you know in one of them. Your native language is polyglot.
