Inflation hits ridikkulus heights

Back in 1993 when on assignment in Belgrade, I managed to score a few 500 Billion Dinar notes:

Until now, I thought that was the highest denomination banknote ever printed. Well, Zimbabwe has upped the ante:

Ten trillion? Hqiz, that just fails to compile.

When you've got inflation in the millions percent, that happens.

That country needs help and lots of it.

The US will be there soon if they don't control the govt's spending.

It's not so much their spending as their printing. The Fed Chairman wants to print double the amount of dollars. That's the road all of these hyperinflated countries go down.

We need to get back on a metal standard.

Needs "help" in the form of a US Marine expeditionary force and a military tribunal to hang Mugabe ...

yeah, that worked so well for Iraq, Afghanistan, Vietnam, Cuba, Kuwait, Mexico and Korea.

For such a war-hungry nation, the USA sure does suck at it.

Do the rocks represent the ruins of Old Zimbabwe, of New Zimbabwe, or simply what's backing their currency?

Yikes. What a mess of a country.

Until recently, a friend's daughter was in Zimbabwe with JICA (Japan's Peace Corp). JICA volunteers receive a monthly stipend that's paid locally, in local currency, but in her case, the Foreign Ministry sent her monthly stipend to her parents here in Japan, along with very creative instructions for getting the money to her in US dollars.

I think their currency has more value as a novelty than as actual currency. I know this because I know lots of people trading their real money for this stuff just to say they're a millionaire/multi-millionaire/trillionaire LOL!

I need to change some currency shortly, I might see if I can get one or two trillion dollar notes and get them framed.

Snag one or two for me if you do, and I'll figure out a way to get you reimbursed.

As I recall from history class, in 1923, there were four trillion deutschmarks to the U.S. dollar, but they didn't have bills that big -- they carried money in wheelbarrows.

The old story (possibly apocryphal, but highly plausible) is that money was so worthless that someone left a wheelbarrow full of it outside a store while shopping, and when they came out, only the wheelbarrow had been stolen.

Oh, that 10 Trillion bill is nothing, here's a 100 trillion bank note: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/3/3e/zimbabwe_%24100_trillion_2009_obverse.jpg

Germany has been there before. Here's a 5 000 000 000 000 Mark note issued Nov 1, 1923. The "Billion" is of course the German variety.

I also found a thumbnail of the highest denomination, 100 billion.

Yep, 100 000 000 000 000 Mark, 14 zeroes.

Education comes not only
In a classroom, from a teacher;
The Old Wolf's jaw hits the pavement
As he contemplates these banknotes...
