Writer's Block: Dog Day Afternoon

The Dog Days of summer, the hottest days of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, start today. What's your favorite thing to do in hot weather?

My favorite thing, sadly, is no longer available. When the sidewalks of New York were sizzling, and standing by the ice man's truck as he ran his blocks through the chipper was the only way to cool off close to home, a silver Ben Franklin (four bits, if you please) would get me into the frosty, air-conditioned movie theatre, where I could spend all day - all day! - if I wanted, watching the cartoons, short subjects, newsreels, and double-feature... over and over, until the sun was low over the Hudson and the heat had begun to abate somewhat, and hunger finally drove me home.

Now it's ten bucks, endless advertisements and get the hell out so we can clean the place, buddy. Sigh

Aye. It was a very pretty coin, too. Before Ben we had the Walking Liberty half, which, together with the Augustus St. Gaudens $20.00 gold piece (double eagle), and the Standing Liberty quarter, make up the three most beautiful US coins ever produced - at least in my view.

You should turn your money over at the start of the month (turn it over to me, for instance!)

I know what you mean. There's something about the feel of real money that almost makes it edible. Collecting coins as a kid was cool, because anything above 5¢ was silver, and you could still find some of the oldies in change. It would have been even more awesome to have been in a position to collect coins around the turn of the century, when gold was still in circulation.

If only time travel were possible... *sigh*

You have to remind yourself to remove the wrappers from chocolate gelt coins before eating them.

You and me both, brother. It's a great way to get out of the pains and stupidity of this one...
